Wild-crafted Wellbeing and Healing Teas

Founded by Sarita Merlo, who is a naturopath and herbalist, Byron Bay Teas is produced using premium ingredients from around the world to create truly unique flavours and healing properties. “As a naturopath and herbalist, I have an implicit interest in holistic health. I have always been an avid tea drinker. It's a habit inspired by indigenous communities and cultures all over the world who have long appreciated the remedial qualities of tea and herbs. Prompted by the healing properties of herbs, and keen to turn a cultural tradition into modern-day practice, I founded the Byron Bay Tea Company in 2004”.  You’ll find a huge range of teas from traditional, to herbal, to oriental and specific healing and wellbeing blends like Immunity, Nursing and Energy blends. The Byron Bay Tea Company takes great care in selecting tea, herbs, fruits, and spices of  exceptional quality with the belief that natural, certified organic, wild-crafted and pesticide-free ingredients are better for you. This means the range does not use flavourings or additives- just the real ingredients. The "Energy" and "Glow" Byron Bay Tea Company teas featured in this season's Peony Parcel wellness subscription box are delicious to enjoy any time of the day.

Sarita shared with us a little more about her approach to wellness and self care and more about the behind the scenes work at the Byron Bay Tea Company.

"Me Time" with Sarita - Founder of the Byron Bay Tea Company

Inspiration   Byron Bay Tea Company was inspired by the natural health hot spot of Byron Bay and it’s aboriginal heritage as a healing ground. Drawing on my herbal medicine knowledge and keen to turn the tradition of tea drinking into a modern day practice, I decided to create this range of signature teas to assist one in reaching their optimum state of health. I wanted to create something different to just a plain Peppermint and Chamomile tea and startes blending organic herbs with other natural and exotic ingredients such as vanilla bean, berries and spices- to create some really unique and delicious flavours. Byron Bay Tea Company continues to experiment with form and flavour to create their healthy beverages including our latest additions- powdered beverages- including Fortify (a medicinal mushroom latte) and Spice Dream (a natural chai latte brew).

Art  The design draws on my love of the natural beauty of Byron Bay and is a tribute to the Bundjalung nation including those from the Arakwal, Widjabul, Bandjalang and Nyangbal Tribes, whose land we operate on and from. My designer has featured the elements of the ocean, coastline and hinterland in the design that has been inspired by Aboriginal dot artwork. The thinking behind the B icon is based upon Byron’s most famous geographical asset – the beach. We have used the idea of the sea meeting the land to form the B as the primary brand symbol. The curved arches represent both the waves rolling in to meet the land and the two bays either-side of the headland.

Manifesto  The health of the individual and the sustainability of the planet is at the forefront of everything we do. We offer beverages that help support one’s health by using only natural and organic ingredients that are free from pesticides. Teabags are made from a biodegradable material, packaging is either recyclable or reusable and we proudly support Save the Bees Australia in their efforts to promote awareness around the declining bee population.

Hero  DIGEST is my favourite and was the tea that I was blending and brewing myself before I started Byron Bay Tea Company. Everyone can benefit from this one!
